Lil Sur (aka Juhi Gupta) is a DJ, researcher, and writer from San Francisco and now living in Rotterdam. Her eclectic sets draw from the formative scenes and places that have shaped her musical journey: South Asian diasporic and percussive music, West Coast rave and experimental bass, Midwest house and acid, and forward-thinking psychedelic techno from Western Europe. As a cultural heritage researcher and writer, she approaches DJing as a form of emotive, self-reflexive storytelling rooted in the histories and lineages of electronic music. Her genre-fluid sets often weave folk music from her research and travels alongside early and contemporary club music, connecting sounds across time and place. Lil Sur is a stalwart of DIY and underground culture, and her work is grounded in a belief in the radical potential of the dancefloor and in music as a tool for connection, empathy, and collective imagination. A long-time lover of community radio, she started DJing in 2018 on WHPK, a storied station on Chicago’s South Side; she now hosts a monthly residency, Kismat, on San Francisco’s sutro.fm.
